Sir John Herschel invented the cyanotype or ‘blueprint’ in 1842 and the process was both scientifically and creatively developed by Anna Atkins between 1843 to 1853 in her studies of seaweeds, algae and ferns. The process recorded a precise negative outline and made the connection between art and science. My blueprints are fictional impressions to suggest elements such as the movement of water, the relationship of beetles, butterflies, snails or seahorses to their environments. My cyanotypes may also enhance the surface of paper-cast heads and plants, recording their impression both in relief and on the surface of the paper. The resulting images range in colour from cerulean to deep Prussian blue.
